HP Victus Review: A Budget Gaming Laptop Dogged by Overheating

Quick take

The HP Victus draws budget gaming buyers with its specs-per-dollar, but the owner feedback tells a cautionary story. Overheating dominates — multiple owners report CPUs hitting 100°C, throttling, and laptops sleeping or restarting under load, sometimes even at boot. Add hinge-reliability warnings, short battery life and weak speakers, and several owners flatly say to avoid it. If you go in expecting to manage thermals on a budget machine, it can game; if you want something that just works, read the complaints first. This page has 10 visible evidence snippets, so treat it as an early buyer-feedback scan rather than a settled verdict.

Buying Verdict

Weak recommendation
Buyer Signal Score 1.8 / 5

The HP Victus sells on specs-per-dollar, and shoppers are drawn to it for that — but the owner feedback is overwhelmingly cautionary. The single dominant theme is overheating: owners report CPUs reaching 100°C, throttling and lag while gaming, laptops going to sleep under load, and in one case heating and restarting during boot. Beyond thermals, owners and advisors warn about hinge issues, short 3-4 hour battery life, harsh speakers after a Windows reset, and a soldered (non-upgradeable) GPU, with some flatly saying to avoid HP Victus. Buy it only if you accept a budget machine that may need thermal management and you value raw specs over reliability; if you want a laptop that just works, the Lenovo LOQ is the alternative owners point to. Complaint Overheats to 100C CPU under gaming load 2026-06-07

HP Victus Laptop Overheating I have a HP Victus laptop - bought in October 2024. i5-13420H and RTX4050 It is working absolutely fine under normal usage. But, while gaming or doing CPU/GPU intensive tasks it starts overheating. (CPU reaches 100°C and GPU reaches 90°C) and goes to sleep automatically. To check what's causing the issue I ran Prime95 stress test and CPU reached 100°C but still laptop didn't go to sleep. After that I ran Furmark to test GPU, it reached 90°C and within 3 mins, it went to sleep mode

Today I applied new thermal paste to my GPU and CPU. While the GPU temperatures are normal, the CPU is running between 90°C and 100°C, causing significant lag while gaming. I am unsure if I applied it correctly; I only applied the paste to the chip surface and not the surrounding area. All my drivers are up to date. Buying Questions About HP Victus

Quick answers to the main review, complaints, buyer-fit, and comparison questions shoppers ask before choosing HP Victus.

Why does the HP Victus overheat?

Overheating is the most-reported issue, with owners seeing CPUs hit 100°C and laptops throttle or go to sleep under load. Some hit it even after repasting, and one experiences heating and restarts at boot. Inadequate cooling for the components appears to be the core problem, so plan on thermal management.

Is the HP Victus reliable?

Reliability is a concern. Owners and advisors warn about hinge issues, the overheating reports are frequent, and some flatly recommend avoiding it. If reliability is a priority, weigh those warnings seriously.

Is the HP Victus battery life good?

Not for a daily driver — one owner reports just 3-4 hours, enough that they're considering replacing it with a MacBook. Like most gaming laptops, battery life is a weak point.

Is the HP Victus worth it?

It can offer strong specs for the price, which is its main appeal, but the heavy skew toward overheating and reliability complaints makes it a calculated risk rather than a safe bet. Several owners advise looking elsewhere.

HP Victus vs Lenovo LOQ: which is better?

Owners cross-shopping budget gaming laptops often point to the Lenovo LOQ as the steadier choice, particularly given the Victus's thermal and reliability complaints. If you want fewer surprises, the LOQ is the safer pick.

What are the most common HP Victus problems?

Overheating tops the list by a wide margin, followed by hinge-reliability warnings, short battery life and weak speakers. Value doubts on used and open-box deals also come up.
